Barcelona invests 150 million euros to protect its coastline

Barcelona has launched a 150-million-euro project to protect its coastline from sea level rise, storms and erosion. The plan includes widening beaches, moving part of the infrastructure away from the sea and creating 22 hectares of public space.

Barcelona is changing the way it protects its coastline from the consequences of climate change. The Spanish city will invest 150 million euros in restoring and adapting the shoreline, increasingly threatened by storms, erosion and rising sea levels.

The project includes creating 22 hectares of public space along the Sant Marti coastline.

Instead of constantly rebuilding damaged areas, Barcelona will move part of the infrastructure further inland and pull back the protective walls.

This will allow the beaches to be widened, which will serve as natural barriers against waves and storms.

About 70% of the artificial sand added in 2010 has disappeared, while in 2023 part of the coastal promenade collapsed after a storm.
