Begaj hosts Ursula von der Leyen: EU integration, the country’s strategic objective
The President of the country, Bajram Begaj, hosted the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, expressing his gratitude for the support for Albania and reconfirming that membership in the European Union remains the country’s strategic objective.
The head of state described this process as transformative for strengthening institutions, democracy and citizens’ welfare, stressing that Albania has advanced significantly in the negotiations toward their finalization.
The Growth Plan, SEPA and EU4Schools were mentioned as tangible examples of the success of this process.
“Albania approaches this process with confidence, but also with a clear understanding of the responsibility it carries. Our ambition is to maintain the pace and continue progress toward closing all the chapters by the end of 2027,” President Begaj stressed.
During the meeting, the head of state underlined that the rule of law, the justice reform and the strengthening of democratic institutions remain fundamental priorities.
He reconfirmed the position that Albania’s EU membership must be based on merit and concrete results.
“We believe that the only sustainable path is that of concrete reforms. Not only to make laws, but to raise standards to the European ones and to implement them,” President Begaj said.
The head of state reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to continue its European path with responsibility and dedication, while also contributing to the security, stability and prosperity of the region and of Europe.
