Beriša calls elections for Serbia’s national minority councils — vote on November 8

Serbia’s Minister for Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue, Demo Beriša (in a caretaker mandate), today, September 18, 2026, called elections for the members of the national councils of national minorities, to be held on November 8, 2026.

Members of 23 national minorities take part in the elections. On September 16, the Ministry provisionally closed the special electoral rolls and found that 21 minorities — including the Albanian minority — meet the conditions for direct elections: Albanians, Bosniaks, Bulgarians, Hungarians, Macedonians, Roma, Romanians, Croats, Slovaks and others. Members of the Gorani and Russian minorities elect their representatives through an electoral assembly.

After signing the decision at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade, Beriša stressed that the national councils are an important form of minority self-government, with significant competences in culture, education, information and the official use of languages and alphabets. He invited members of minorities to register on the special electoral roll to exercise their right to vote.

The regular elections for the national councils are held every four years — the previous ones took place on November 13, 2022.
