Bessent: Iran loaded not a single barrel of oil onto tankers in September — the Trump administration is cutting off the regime’s main source of revenue
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Iran had loaded “not a single barrel of oil” onto tankers throughout the month of September, describing this as the direct result of the Trump administration’s strategy to close Tehran’s financial tap, as Al Jazeera reports.
In a post on the social network X, Bessent said: “The Trump administration is cutting off the Iranian regime’s most critical source of revenue.” The statement comes as Washington has stepped up economic pressure on Tehran through a naval blockade of Iranian ports and a wave of new sanctions.
Only today, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned Iran’s railway and automobile conglomerates, as part of “Operation Economic Outcast”, which aims to cut off financing for the war, missile construction and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to the same Al Jazeera reporting, Bessent said the Treasury is dismantling the infrastructure that allows Iran to evade sanctions and move illicit funds.
If the claim of “zero barrels” is confirmed, it would be the heaviest economic blow to Tehran since the start of the war seven months ago — a country whose economy depends almost entirely on oil exports, now practically isolated from the world market.
