Brandon Weems named general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers, former classmate of LeBron James
Brandon Weems has been named general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers, serving under team president Koby Altman. The position was vacant following Mike Gansey’s departure to the Philadelphia 76ers, while Weems steps into the top role after a stint as assistant general manager since February 2022.
According to Bleacher Report, Weems has been part of the Cleveland organization for about a decade, with experience in scouting and other personnel responsibilities before rising to the assistant GM role. LeBron James’s agent, Rich Paul, has described Weems as “essentially LeBron’s brother” and noted that his presence may have been a key factor in clubs’ efforts to attract the star.
Weems played alongside LeBron James at the high school level and then continued his college career at Walsh University. Before joining the NBA front office, he also had experience as part of the coaching staffs at Oakland University, Drexel and Kentucky.
During Weems’s tenure as assistant general manager, Cleveland managed to qualify for the playoffs four years in a row, reaching the Eastern Conference Finals last season, where they were eliminated by the New York Knicks. With players like Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, the organization remains a strong contender, and Weems’s task now will be to help improve the roster to prepare for upcoming challenges. According to Bleacher Report, his appointment is seen as an important step for the stability and direction of the front office.
