Carly Rae Jepsen to write music for “10 Things I Hate About You” musical; previews begin August 17, 2027

Carly Rae Jepsen is writing the music and lyrics for the new “10 Things I Hate About You” musical, the stage adaptation of the beloved 1999 romantic comedy, as the singer herself revealed in a new interview with People. The project, which will begin previews on August 17, 2027, is aiming for Broadway — bringing Jepsen back to the boards more than a decade after her Broadway debut.

The 40-year-old “Call Me Maybe” star is collaborating with Grammy-winning composer and producer Ethan Gruska. She discussed the project this week on Jake Shane’s “Therapuss” podcast, where she promoted her new double album “Night and Day”. “It’s been the dream of all dreams,” Jepsen said. “You can’t think of a better script. It’s iconic for a reason and it has a cult following for a reason.”

The musical is based on the 1999 film starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger — itself a modern reimagining of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” — and follows sisters Kat and Bianca Stratford through loves, cliques and teenage angst. The book is written by Lena Dunham and playwright Jessica Huang, while direction and choreography are entrusted to two-time Tony winner Christopher Wheeldon. Grammy and two-time Tony winner Tom Kitt handles music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations, whom Jepsen called “the music director of my dreams.”

Jepsen says the project would never have been born without the “left turn” she took in 2014, when she took over the lead role in “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella” on Broadway from Laura Osnes — just two years after “Call Me Maybe” made her an international star. “I don’t think ‘10 Things’ would have happened if I hadn’t said yes to ‘Cinderella’ back then,” she said on the podcast. Two years later, she appeared as Frenchy in Fox’s television production “Grease: Live” (2016). The theater and cast for “10 Things I Hate About You” have not yet been announced, but the project is considered one of the most anticipated of the 2027 season.
