“Spring Awakening” extended to April 2027 on Off-Broadway: the biggest on-sale in Studio Seaview’s history
The eagerly awaited Off-Broadway revival of the musical Spring Awakening will be extended until 4 April 2027 — almost two months longer than initially planned — due to “unprecedented demand”, as BroadwayWorld announces. The news was made public on Friday, before the production had played a single preview: performances begin on 27 November at Studio Seaview, while the official opening is on 17 December; the initial plan envisaged the show running only until 14 February.
This became the most successful on-sale in the history of the Studio Seaview venue. “The response to Danya Taymor’s production of Spring Awakening has been incredible,” said Greg Nobile, CEO of Seaview. “It is testament to the enduring power of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s seminal work and to the way this musical continues to resonate with audiences.”
The musical, adapted from Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, follows a group of 19th-century German teenagers discovering their sexuality in a deeply repressive world — an anxiety that composer Sheik, who died in August at the age of 56, expressed in a contemporary rock score that has marked modern musical theatre, as Playbill writes. The production is directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor, with choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall.
The cast includes Tyler Jordan Wesley as Melchior, Ashlyn Maddox as Wendla, Ryo Kamibayashi as Moritz, Jada Simone Clark as Thea, Nando Morland as Otto, Khadija Sankoh as Martha and others — some of them selected from a July open call at which 2,532 performers were seen. Tickets with special access for subscribers go on sale on 7 October at 9:00 ET, while the general sale starts on 8 October at springawakening.com.
