Carroll’s autobiography: Rooney smoked cigarettes and drank beer during England national team gatherings

Wayne Rooney smoked cigarettes and drank beer with other players during England national team commitments, according to a new tell-all book, written by one of his teammates.

Former Newcastle and Liverpool striker Andy Carroll has revealed secrets from inside the England national team camp, including how Rooney invited the team’s stars to join him in a drinking session during a training camp.

Andy, who also played for West Ham, was called up to the England national team for the first time in 2010, under the strict Italian coach, Fabio Capello.

He writes about Rooney: “He’d call me at two in the afternoon and say: ‘Andy, come to my room, now’. ‘No’, I’d say, ‘not now Wazza, it’s too early’.

“But he always made me give in. I’d find him lying in bed watching TV, smoking and drinking beer from the bottle.”

He was surrounded by cigarette packs, crates of beer and bottles of wine (which he would ask the hotel manager to bring to his room) and, very quickly, his room would fill with players. Nobody got drunk; it was simply “Wazza’s” way of breaking the monotony with a glass or two, which was better than lying in bed staring at the walls.

According to Carroll’s book, these “meetings” happened around 2010-2011, during the time when Capello was England’s coach.
