Chicago White Sox Clinch 2026 MLB Playoff Berth With 9–1 Win Over Royals
The Chicago White Sox secured their place in the 2026 MLB playoffs with a 9–1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, a victory that came just moments before the Chicago Cubs also confirmed their postseason berth. This is the first playoff qualification for the White Sox since 2021 and only the third since the 2009 season; the two previous years were extremely difficult for the club, including a 41–121 campaign and a 60–102 season.
As Bleacher Report notes, the club’s leadership made significant moves that drove the turnaround: Chase Meidroth and Miguel Vargas arrived in 2024 trades; Colson Montgomery and Sean Burke were 2021 draft picks; Tristan Peters came over from the Tampa Bay Rays in December for a player to be named later; and Munetaka Murakami signed a two-year deal after a successful career in Japan. Vargas, Peters and Murakami were all selected as All-Stars this season, and the team’s offense ranks sixth in home runs and fifth in runs scored.
According to Bleacher Report, the 2026 success rests primarily on the lineup, while the starting rotation remains a work in progress: Sean Burke has been excellent as the No. 1 starter, and the bullpen has a top-ten ERA when deployed in decisive games. Reinforcements are still needed for the club to become a true American League contender, but this season’s qualification marks significant progress for the organization.
