Colson Montgomery sets unwanted MLB strikeout record after 224-strikeout season
Colson Montgomery, shortstop of the Chicago White Sox, ended the season by breaking Major League Baseball’s single-season strikeout record with 224 strikeouts. The record-setting moment came in the fifth inning of Friday’s game, when he was called out looking against starter Tomoyuki Sugano.
As Bleacher Report reports, during Thursday’s game against the Kansas City Royals, Montgomery struck out in his second at-bat, having earlier tied Mark Reynolds’ record of 223 single-season strikeouts.
Over the season, Montgomery entered Thursday’s game batting around .200 but contributed 31 home runs and 87 RBIs. His recent stretch featured a poor run of strikeouts that put him atop the season strikeout leaderboard.
It is a painful end to the regular season, but the White Sox have already secured a playoff spot, and Montgomery can try to overcome this difficult finish with strong postseason performances. According to Bleacher Report, he now holds the single-season record of 224 strikeouts.
