Crete on ‘Red Code’ over severe weather: schools closed in Chania and Rethymno
Crete has been put on “Red Code”, the highest alert level, as severe weather has begun to hit the island. The authorities have activated the 112 warning message for the protection of citizens, as ProtoThema reports in an article published this evening.
All schools in Chania and Rethymno will be closed on Thursday, October 1, 2026. The announcement was made by Chania’s deputy regional governor Nikos Kalogeris and by the Rethymno Regional Unit, based on the National Meteorological Service (EMY) bulletin on dangerous weather phenomena.
Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias forecasts extreme rainfall through Sunday in Crete and Evia, with a serious risk of flooding. According to forecast models, extreme amounts of rain are expected especially in Chania and Rethymno, while Evia is also expected to be hit hard by the bad weather wave.
Citizens are advised to take great care when moving around, avoiding unnecessary travel and areas at risk of flooding, ProtoThema writes.
Civil Protection and the local authorities will monitor the situation hour by hour, while citizens are advised to follow the official instructions and the next EMY bulletins.
