Dismal turnout for Serbia–Greece: only about 5,000 fans at ‘Rajko Mitic’
Serbia’s footballers hosted Greece’s national team on Thursday, September 24, at the “Rajko Mitic” stadium in Belgrade, in the first match of the new edition of the football Nations League, in the elite division. It marks a fresh start for the Serbian “eagles,” led in this cycle by new coach Veljko Paunovic.
Paunovic surprised with his chosen lineup. The match was started by: V. Milinkovic-Savic, Simic, Erakovic, Pavlovic, Kostic, Zivkovic, S. Milinkovic-Savic, N. Maksimovic, Cvetkovic, Tadic and Jovic.
But the unpleasant surprise of the evening was the very poor turnout in the stands. According to Serbian media estimates, around 5,000 fans attended the match, of whom over 500 were visiting supporters — an unusually low number for a national team match in Belgrade.
This is Serbia’s first match in the new Nations League edition, following a disappointing summer in which the national team failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The empty stands are seen as a sign of the public’s disappointment with the national team.
