DPS of Žabljak Boycotts the Ceremonial Session: “No Reason to Celebrate”

Žabljak – Councillors of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) will not attend the ceremonial session of the Žabljak municipal Assembly, the party’s municipal committee announced. They will mark Municipality Day and Liberation Day by laying a wreath at the Monument to fallen fighters and victims of fascist terror.

According to the DPS, the four years of the current government in Žabljak have been marked by unkept promises, blocked development and a lack of accountability to citizens — hence, as the statement says, “there is no reason to celebrate”. As a clear example it cites the “Savin Kuk” ski center, which, according to the DPS, has never been in worse shape than today, while its reconstruction has not even begun.

The DPS also claims that the Mayor of the Municipality awarded, through a direct agreement, the preparation of the design brief for “Savin Kuk” to a person whose engagement is linked to security, business and political controversies — according to them, without the knowledge of the Development Bank, the owner of the ski center. It also mentions the issue of the town square on the site of the former military barracks, for which the Ministry of Public Administration has found violations and serious breaches of procedural rules.

The statement also says that illegal construction has flourished in Žabljak with the tacit consent of the competent ministry and the local administration, as well as illegal connections to the water supply network — including facilities for which inspection bodies have issued construction ban orders. Among the examples cited is the so-called “Borje on water”, which, due to its megalomaniac construction, seriously burdens and endangers the water and electricity supply. According to the DPS, the ruling coalition has in four years failed to adopt a single planning document; the preparation of the Žabljak PUP has been entrusted to the competent ministry and the Spatial Planning Agency, with a projected value of 243,000 euros to be paid by the Municipality — raising the question of who will be held responsible for the funds spent from the municipal budget on the Draft PUP without any concrete result.

The DPS also criticizes the shutdown and renaming of the Cultural-Artistic Society “Radoje Dakić – Brko”, which had existed for over half a century. “On Municipality Day and Liberation Day we will not spend our time applauding a staged performance for the public directed by the local government, but bowing before the shadows of those who gave their lives for freedom and love of the homeland”, the statement says. The DPS adds that it expects a change of government after the next local elections in June 2027.
