EU integration: Minister Hoxha from Vienna says Albania’s progress is merit-based

Albania remains committed to the European integration process through structural reforms and concrete results, while the enlargement process must remain credible and based on individual merit.

That was the keynote of the message delivered by the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ferit Hoxha, during his participation in the high-level meeting of ministers for European affairs held in Vienna.

Focus on regional cooperation and gradual integration

The meeting was organised by Austria’s Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Family, Claudia Bauer. At the centre of discussions between representatives of the Slavkov format countries (Austria, Czechia and Slovakia) and the heads of diplomacy of the Western Balkans were the progress of the European Union’s enlargement process and ways to strengthen cooperation with candidate countries.

In his address, Minister Hoxha stressed that it is important for the benefits of the integration process to be tangible for citizens at every stage. He called for clearer and more convincing public communication on the membership steps, aimed at bringing the EU closer to citizens and clarifying the concrete opportunities this path brings.

“Enlargement must remain a credible process, based on merit and with tangible benefits for citizens at every stage,” Hoxha declared.

Youth and participation in EU institutions

Special attention in the minister’s speech was devoted to the younger generation. Hoxha stressed the need for young people to feel they belong to the European family even before the official moment of membership.

To make this possible, he called for candidate countries to be gradually included in the work of EU institutions. According to him, this early involvement would prepare states to contribute effectively from the very first day of their full membership.

Investing in Europe’s peace and security

Analysing the current strategic and geopolitical challenges facing the continent, the Foreign Minister stressed that EU enlargement is not merely a political choice but a necessity for regional and European stability.

“It is a geopolitical imperative and an essential investment in Europe’s peace, security, stability, competitiveness and resilience,” he said.

Closing his address, Minister Hoxha reaffirmed Albania’s will to continue the necessary reforms at a fast pace.

“We will continue to deliver results, to progress on the basis of merit and to cooperate closely with our partners towards a stronger, more united and safer Europe,” Minister Hoxha concluded.
