European Commission: We will closely follow Serbia’s parliamentary elections on October 25
The European Commission said it will closely follow Serbia’s parliamentary elections on October 25.
According to an EU spokesperson for the portal Savremena politika, free, fair and transparent elections are the very essence of European democracy and must be organized in line with European and international standards.
The spokesperson added that the proper functioning of democratic institutions, especially in administering elections, is also essential for Serbia’s EU membership process.
Among the standards mentioned are respect for fundamental freedoms, citizens’ right to make an informed and free electoral choice, and equal conditions for all participants — including equal media access, separation of the state from political parties, and avoiding unjustified advantages stemming from public office.
The spokesperson also stressed the importance of the elections being observed by ODIHR/OSCE and domestic observers. ODIHR opened its observer mission in Belgrade on September 16 for these snap elections.
