European Democratic Party Condemns Vučić’s Rhetoric After UN Speech: ‘The Balkans Deserve Reconciliation, Not Division’

The European Democratic Party (EDP) tonight condemned “rhetoric that fuels hostility between neighbors,” after Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly, in which he accused Croatia of glorifying its Nazi past, as Danas reports.

In a post on the social network X, the EDP wrote: “The Balkans deserve reconciliation, accountability and a European future, not words that reopen wounds and ignite divisions” — firmly condemning rhetoric that fuels hostility between neighbors. The post was accompanied by a photo of Vučić and the slogan: “He chooses division… The Balkans deserve reconciliation.” And: “Peace in the region requires courage, truth and dialogue.”

In his New York speech, Vučić accused Croatia of taking pride in its Nazi past and of using Nazi slogans and symbols, warning that the Serbian people cannot accept the revival of “the most terrifying ghosts of the past.” According to him, “moral sermons” from Croatia are completely unacceptable.

Context: Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković had already responded to Vučić’s statements on September 24; the European Democrats’ reaction is the latest development in the same story.
