Final MLB team power rankings after the 2026 regular season
Preseason predictions were bold: the New York Mets, Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays looked set to challenge the Dodgers’ dominance, while the Tampa Bay Rays were expected to top the AL East and the Chicago White Sox looked at risk of another 100-loss season. Instead of staying with the predictions, the teams played the games — and several realities changed radically.
As Bleacher Report reports, the rankings include a rundown of all teams from 30th to 1st, highlighting both those who reached the playoffs and those who ended the regular season. In the 30–26 group are the Colorado Rockies (58-104, preseason rank 29), who collapsed after August 17 (8-30) despite a -192 run differential on the road and surpassing their projected win total; the Los Angeles Angels (62-100, preseason 26), where Mike Trout played over 140 games and rookie Walbert Ureña showed consistency with a 2.97 ERA over 148.1 innings; the Oakland Athletics (64-98, preseason 23), badly hit by injuries but showing positive signs from players like Zack Gelof and Henry Bolte; the San Francisco Giants (65-97, preseason 13), who struggled with absences but saw Rafael Devers catch fire in the second half; and the Kansas City Royals (69-93, preseason 20), who saw a promising showing from rookie Jac Caglianone while the pitching staff regressed.
The 25–21 group saw movement: the Cincinnati Reds (75-87, preseason 17) kept three strong young stars but a lack of support limited their success; the Seattle Mariners (76-86, preseason 4) were the season’s biggest disappointment despite Emerson Hancock bringing hope; the Minnesota Twins (77-85, preseason 25) stayed close to playoff contention but fell off after August; the Washington Nationals (77-85, preseason 30) had a strong offense (gains in steals and runs) but the bullpen blew up with 42 blown saves; and the Detroit Tigers (76-86, preseason 9) had a positive run differential (+71) but failed in close games.
The 20–18 group marked some surprises and letdowns: the New York Mets (74-88, preseason 3) improved after July 4 and confirmed Andy Green as manager; the Toronto Blue Jays (79-83, preseason 2) had an up-and-down year, with Dylan Cease battling for the Cy Young and Louis Varland among the AL’s strongest relievers; the St. Louis Cardinals (77-85, preseason 28) exceeded expectations after trading big names, with progress from Jordan Walker and JJ Wetherholt.
Between spots 17–13 and 12–10 came teams that just missed out or raised expectations: the Texas Rangers (80-82, preseason 18) lost the AL West title by one game and had surprising results against weak rivals; the Baltimore Orioles (79-82, preseason 10) saw Pete Alonso rise in clutch moments; the Miami Marlins (80-82, preseason 24) stayed competitive and finished with a positive run differential; the Pittsburgh Pirates (82-80, preseason 21) had one of their best seasons in decades; and the Arizona Diamondbacks (86-76, preseason 22) made a strong comeback but were eliminated on the final day.
At spots 12–10, the Houston Astros (81-81, preseason 14) entered the playoffs as a team without a winning record, but came in hot, hitting 32 home runs in their last 13 games with several starters in good form; the Chicago White Sox (84-78, preseason 27) returned to the postseason after difficult years, with Munetaka Murakami, Miguel Vargas and Colson Montgomery providing the offensive power, but the pitching staff lacked consistency; the Cleveland Guardians (85-77, preseason 16) emerged with a strong starting pitching rotation, creating hope for continuity.
The rankings sum up how preseason expectations often don’t determine the end of the story: some teams tipped as challengers failed, while others exceeded expectations thanks to player development and staff management. According to Bleacher Report, this rundown shows the great variability of MLB and how seasonal performance determines fate for the playoff phase.
