First photos of Phillipa Soo in “Pre-Existing Condition”: the “Hamilton” star takes over the role after Lupita Nyong’o
After Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, New York’s Off-Broadway stage has a new star: Phillipa Soo, the Tony and Emmy nominee known as Eliza Schuyler in “Hamilton”, has taken over the central role of the unnamed woman “A” in Marin Ireland’s play “Pre-Existing Condition”, as Playbill reports, which has also published the first photos of her performance at the Greenwich House Theater.
Soo will play the role until October 17. The production, directed by Maria Dizzia, follows a sold-out run at the Connelly Theater in 2024 and will remain on the Greenwich House stage until January 8, 2027. The play follows an unnamed woman, “A”, and the quiet, everyday challenges of moving forward after a life-changing relationship.
The production’s formula is an interesting one: the role of “A” will be alternated by a series of stars throughout the season. Critics previously saw Nyong’o, whose engagement ended on September 26, while after Soo come: Tony nominee Susannah Flood (October 18–November 7), Hari Nef (November 9–28), Emmy and Golden Globe winner Edie Falco (November 30–December 19) and Obie Award-winning director Whitney White (December 21–January 8, 2027). It was also announced this week that Drama Desk winner Susannah Perkins will take over Sarah Steele’s role starting in October.
The cast also includes Drama Desk nominee Greg Keller, Pulitzer finalist Dael Orlandersmith and Drama Desk winner Sarah Steele, returning from the Connelly run, while casting was done by Taylor Williams. The production is produced by Jessica Chase with Susan Kelechi Watson, with co-producers including Jesse Eisenberg, Sterling K. Brown and Charlie Kaufman; a portion of the proceeds will go to the “Survivor Leadership Fund” of the organization Sanctuary for Families.
