Five new stars take the road to “Hadestown”: Norbert Leo Butz leads the new Broadway cast
Anaïs Mitchell’s Tony Award-winning musical “Hadestown” has welcomed five new principal cast members to its Broadway company, as BroadwayWorld reports: two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz will play Hermes, Amber Iman Persephone, Jasmin Savoy Brown Eurydice, Ben Davis Hades and Kayko Orpheus. All five have taken their places on the stage of the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York.
For Butz, the engagement marks a significant return to Broadway — and a chance to join a show he first admired as an audience member. “I thought maybe I was done with Broadway, or Broadway was done with me. I wasn’t finding roles, and I started out as ‘Hadestown’s’ biggest fan,” he said, recounting that he had seen the original cast, fallen in love with the show and brought his children to see it too. “So, in this particular show, it feels like a dream come true — simply because I think it’s a masterpiece.”
Jasmin Savoy Brown makes her Broadway debut in the role of Eurydice. “How lucky am I? Honestly, this music, this score is so beautiful, so rich,” she said. “We are in the middle of week three and I am still discovering new things about Eurydice every day — and I believe I will do so the whole time. I feel deeply lucky to be telling this story and to be bringing my natural voice to it.”
BroadwayWorld met all five stars for a series of video interviews, in which they talk about the experience of entering together the world of Anaïs Mitchell’s musical. The production, which continues at the Walter Kerr Theatre, remains one of Broadway’s most enduring titles after winning the Tony for Best Musical.
