FOCUS – Germany Grants Another €1 Million for Nuclear Safety in Ukraine

BERLIN/VIENNA, September 15 /ATSH-DPA/ – Germany will provide another €1 million to improve safety at Ukraine’s nuclear power plants, the German Environment Ministry announced.

Parliamentary State Secretary Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter is expected to announce the funds during a conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) taking place in Vienna today.

So far, Germany has given €7.3 million to support the IAEA’s presence and activities in Ukraine. The funds aim to help strengthen the safety of nuclear facilities under wartime conditions.

The biggest concerns relate to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is under Russian control and is the largest in Europe.

Since the start of the war, the plant has continuously faced risks linked to attacks and damage to infrastructure.

The facility has been hit several times by drone strikes and has repeatedly lost external power supply. In these cases, emergency generators have been used to operate vital safety systems.

During the conference, Schwarzelühr-Sutter is also expected to call for greater international support for repairing the protective structure in the Chernobyl zone. This structure was damaged in early 2025.

Germany has planned to contribute €50 million for repairing Chernobyl’s protective structure.

Environment Minister Carsten Schneider made this plan public last month.

German financial support comes at a time when the safety of Ukraine’s nuclear plants remains a major international concern due to the continuation of the war.
