FOCUS – Italy Scraps Vehicle Tax for Small and Mid-Sized Cars and Motorcycles

ROME, September 17 /ATSH – AA/ – The Italian government has announced the removal of the vehicle tax for small and mid-sized cars and motorcycles, as part of efforts to lower citizens’ tax burden.

“Today, at the Council of Ministers, we approved the removal of the vehicle tax for low- and mid-powered cars, up to 80 kW, and for motorcycles, with the tax exemption applying to one vehicle per citizen,” announced Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the American social network X.

She reaffirmed that the government had chosen to turn part of the resources used until now to cope with high fuel prices “into a simple and structural measure,” aimed mainly at those who frequently use cars and motorcycles in daily life.

“A concrete choice. We are removing one of the taxes Italians dislike most and continuing the path of reducing the tax burden. While others talk about wealth taxes, we are removing a tax on property,” she added.

The ANSA news agency reported that the measure applies to all motorcycles and more than 70 percent of cars currently on the road, covering a total of about 14.5 million vehicles.

Under the decree adopted by the cabinet, the vehicle tax exemption will cover cars with power up to 80 kW, starting from 2027.
