Former Google Expert Warns of AI Threat: AI Could Kill All Humans

Another artificial intelligence expert who warned that the technology could “kill all humans” became a former Google DeepMind researcher on Monday, arguing that time to prevent it may be running out.

Public concern about the potential risks of artificial intelligence has grown after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon revealed he had resigned, partly because “the people building artificial intelligence sincerely believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

Anthropic scientist Evan Hubinger then commented on Coxon’s statements, saying he was right and estimating there is more than a 10% chance that AI could lead to the extinction of all humanity within the next decade. Bilal Chughtai, who announced his departure from Google DeepMind via the X platform, followed suit.

“I recently resigned from Google DeepMind, where I worked on research on the safety and alignment of artificial general intelligence (AGI),” he wrote, adding: “I sincerely believe that AI has the potential to kill us all and that we may run out of time to prevent it.”

Chughtai, who co-authored research papers during his time at Google DeepMind, worked as a research engineer and left the company in July 2026, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Warnings about the AI “race”

The latest warnings come at a time when voices are growing within the industry itself about the risks of uncontrolled development of increasingly powerful systems.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently argued in favor of slowing the pace of development of advanced AI systems. His position has received unusual support from Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and has ignited a new debate about so-called AI “doomerism,” the view that uncontrolled AI development could lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity. Chughtai argued that safe AI development is possible, but will require coordination between companies. “We must avoid this insane race between AI companies,” he said, adding: “We need to pace AI development at a speed that society can handle, so that new risks can be addressed before extreme harm occurs.” However, U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed the warnings, calling the AI industry’s call for regulation a “scam” in a Truth Social post.
