Fuel in Greece: subsidy of up to 20 cents per litre of diesel on the table — announcements on Wednesday
The Greek government is examining scenarios for subsidising fuels, with official announcements expected on Wednesday, 30 September. As ERT reports, the options on the table cover diesel and unleaded petrol, at a time when prices remain high for consumers.
For diesel, a state subsidy of 10 cents per litre currently applies, plus a 5-cent reduction applied by refineries. The scenario under consideration provides for the state subsidy to rise to 10–15 cents per litre, while the refineries’ contribution stays at 5 cents — so the total intervention in the price of diesel would reach 15–20 cents per litre, according to ERT. The current average price of diesel is 2.22 euros per litre.
For unleaded petrol there is no state subsidy; only the refineries’ 10-cent-per-litre reduction applies. The most likely scenario, as ERT reports, is that this reduction continues and is included in Wednesday’s announcements. The average price of unleaded petrol is 2.20 euros per litre.
The subsidies will be reviewed every two weeks, in line with international price trends. Brent crude has fallen to 99.5 dollars per barrel, a factor that directly affects retail price formation at fuel stations.
