‘Game of Thrones’ moves to the cinema: ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ out on June 1, 2029
Warner Bros. announced today, September 29, 2026, that “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest,” the first feature film set in the universe of HBO’s fantasy saga, will be released in cinemas around the world on June 1, 2029. The news was confirmed by, among others, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline.
The film is based on the opening chapters of George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood” and tells the story of Aegon I Targaryen, known as Aegon the Conqueror — the first king of the Targaryen dynasty, who conquered and united Westeros some 300 years before the events of the original series. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, it will be the first time Aegon I has ever appeared on screen.
The direction has been entrusted to Owen Harris, who directed three episodes of the new series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” while the screenplay belongs to Beau Willimon, the creator of “House of Cards” and a writer on the series “Andor.” Aegon arrived in Westeros with his two sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, and the three legendary dragons Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes — the conquest that created the Iron Throne and placed the Targaryens at the head of the Seven Kingdoms.
The cast has not yet been announced and there is no announcement of when filming will start. The project was first announced in April 2026 at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and the setting of the date comes at a moment of uninterrupted expansion of the universe: the second season of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is expected in 2027, while the fourth season of “House of the Dragon” is expected in 2028.
With “Aegon’s Conquest,” “Game of Thrones” takes its first step toward the cinema after the original series ended in 2019 — the biggest test of whether the Westeros epic can also carry the big screen, as Deadline writes.
