“Give Me Some Sugah”: Netflix sets December 16 premiere for Taraji P. Henson film based on the true story of a Chicago baker
Netflix has set December 16, 2026 for the premiere of the drama “Give Me Some Sugah,” the new film directed by Tasha Smith starring Taraji P. Henson. The announcement came through an official Netflix statement on September 24, 2026, while PEOPLE magazine published the first exclusive photos from the shoot.
The film is based on the true story of Lenore Lindsey, owner of a bakery (named “Give Me Some Sugah”) in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, whose life changed after a shocking discovery: one of her most loyal customers, Vamarr Hunter, after learning he was adopted and taking a genetic test, was informed that Lindsey was his biological mother. The story went viral in 2024 after it aired on NBC Chicago, and caught the attention of Tyler Perry.
In the cast, besides Henson as Lenore Lindsey, are Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott (known as Joey Bada$$), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Russell Hornsby, Alexis Louder, Semaj Prather, Arischa Conner, Angela Davis and Caroline Avery Granger; director Tasha Smith herself and producer DeVon Franklin also appear in the film. The screenplay is by Randy Brown (“Miracles From Heaven”), while executive producers are Tony Strickland and Angi Bones for Tyler Perry Studios, along with Bart Lipton.
“Give Me Some Sugah” (previously titled “‘Tis So Sweet”) is the second faith-inspired collaboration between Perry and Franklin for Netflix, after “Ruth and Boaz,” which debuted at number two in Netflix’s global Top 10 films. For Henson, the film continues a busy year with the streaming giant, after 2025’s thriller “Straw” and the comedy “Why Did I Get Married Again?” alongside Perry.
