Greece–Germany tonight at “Toumba”: the national team seeks a second revenge over Germany and top spot in the group

Today, Sunday 4 October 2026, at 21:45 (EEST), the “Toumba” stadium in Thessaloniki will host one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of this Nations League edition: Greece–Germany, valid for the fourth round of Group A2. A week after the historic triumph in Augsburg, the Greek national team seeks a second revenge over Germany and a continuation of its run towards the top of the group. The match will be refereed by French official Clément Turpin, while the stadium, with a capacity of around 28,000 seats, is expected to be full.

The standings after three rounds put Greece on top with 7 points (two wins and a draw), followed by the Netherlands with 5 points, Germany with 4 points (one win, one draw and one defeat) and Serbia with zero points in last place. The success of 27 September in Augsburg, where Dimitris Kourbelis’s goal in the 74th minute sealed the 1–0 victory, remains historic: it was Greece’s FIRST ever victory over Germany, and at the same time Jürgen Klopp’s first defeat as Germany’s coach.

The current form of the two teams is contrasting. Greece, as Bavarian Football Works writes, come after the dramatic 2–2 draw with the Netherlands on Thursday, also at “Toumba”, where a 2–0 lead was thrown away in the 89th minute by Tijjani Reijnders’s goal. Germany, according to Sportsmole, took their first win under Klopp, 2–0 against Serbia in Munich, with goals from Tom Bischof and Florian Wirtz.

Coach Ivan Jovanović has one major absence: Christos Tzolis, injured in his thigh muscle, is expected to miss 2–3 weeks, and Dimitris Pelkas has been called up in his place. On the other hand, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) has called on fans to arrive early at the stadium — the gates open at 18:45 — and to follow the safety rules: lasers, pyrotechnics and smoke bombs are banned.

Germany play tonight for revenge and to keep alive their hopes of first place in the group; Greece only need to avoid defeat to hold on to top spot, but a second victory over “die Mannschaft” would bring them much closer to the Nations League quarter-finals.
