Greece takes over the presidency of the UN Security Council today for the month of October
Greece today took over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of October, as the Anadolu agency reports — the second and final time Athens chairs the Council during its two-year term as a non-permanent member for 2025–2026.
The programme of the Greek presidency, according to the same reporting, foresees two signature events, two open debates and indicative votes for the election of the new UN Secretary-General.
The assumption of the presidency comes at the end of Greece’s second year on the Council. Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis had previously stated at the UN that Athens places emphasis on international law and multilateralism, while Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirmed in his General Assembly speech on September 24 that the Greek presidency would launch new initiatives for maritime security and freedom of navigation, as the official primeminister.gr website published.
With this, Greece aims to place maritime security and the law of the sea at the centre of October’s agenda, at a time of heightened international tension.
