Guterres and Mitsotakis discuss the Cyprus problem on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis discussed the Cyprus problem on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the organization announced. The meeting also covered the war in Ukraine, regional developments and the situation in the Middle East.

The meeting between Guterres and Mitsotakis followed talks the Secretary-General held this week with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis.

Christodoulidis, Turkish-Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman and Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis have also met with the UN envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin.

Holguin said the UN “is continuing its efforts”, although there has been no concrete progress since Guterres’s visit to Cyprus in July. During that visit, Guterres had said he would call an expanded meeting — with both sides, the guarantor powers Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom, and the UN — once “sufficient progress” was made on confidence-building measures, the methodology and the substance of the talks.

Christodoulidis and Erhurman have met three times since July, but the sides remain divided on issues such as political equality, crossing points and the methodology of the talks.
