Qatar’s Prime Minister Hosts Pezeshkian in New York: Talks on De-escalation and Opening the Path to Dialogue

Qatar’s prime minister and foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, has received Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at his residence in New York for discussions on the U.S.–Israel war against Iran.

According to a statement from Qatar’s foreign ministry, the two leaders discussed “the latest developments in the region, together with efforts to reduce tensions and create a favorable environment for dialogue, thus contributing to strengthening regional security and stability.”

The meeting takes place at the height of the UN General Assembly, where in recent days mediated talks have been held between American and Iranian delegations on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war.

Qatar has played a key mediating role throughout the conflict: Tehran’s conditions for ending the war have been relayed to Washington via Doha, while Qatari officials have shuttled between capitals to keep diplomatic channels alive.
