Heavy storm hits Evia and Skiathos: over 100 mm of rain in Psachna, island’s main road flooded
Torrential rains that swept central Greece during the night of Saturday caused flooding and landslides on the island of Evia and in Skiathos, as eKathimerini reports. According to the National Observatory of Athens, within a few hours more than 100 millimeters of rain fell in Psachna, Evia, and over 50 millimeters in Skiathos.
In Skiathos, the water flooded the main road of the island’s capital and dragged goods from neighboring shops. Fortunately, no person was injured, eKathimerini reports.
In central Evia, the rain caused flooded homes, landslides and rocks fallen on roads. Firefighters intervened early on Sunday to rescue a 55-year-old Israeli man and a woman who had been stuck in a car in the mud near Politika.
The National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an “orange” warning for torrential rains, storms and possible hail in parts of central and southern Greece. Northeastern winds are expected to reach up to 8 beaufort in the central and northern Aegean, according to eKathimerini.
