House Demands for Third Time That Trump End the Iran War — Seven Republicans Vote with Democrats

Tuesday’s vote was the third time the House — led by Democrats but with support from some Republicans — has ordered Trump to withdraw troops from Iran. Democrats call it their most important vote yet, one of the House’s last votes before the November elections.

Three new Republicans joined the Democrats this time: Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn of Iowa (both in competitive seats) and Nancy Mace of South Carolina, who is leaving Congress after this term. The Republicans who had voted before are Thomas Massie (Kentucky), Tom Barrett (Michigan), Warren Davidson (Ohio) and Brian Fitzpatrick (Pennsylvania) — seven Republican votes in total, up from four on the two previous resolutions.

Officially, House Republican leaders do not tell members how to vote on this type of resolution. But Trump has publicly called it a loyalty test and has attacked Republicans who voted against him on the issue.

A previous effort to limit Trump’s military authorization in Iran ended dramatically: enough Republican senators initially voted to approve it, but White House pressure forced one Republican senator to change his vote. It is unclear whether the Senate will have the votes, but Democrats plan to try again this week.

Public context: voters are growing increasingly skeptical of the war — 67% say Trump’s decisions on military action in Iran have harmed the U.S. (CNN poll), while fuel prices are climbing again, with oil past $6 a gallon.
