How the 2026 MLB playoff bracket works: wild-card formats, division series and schedule

The 2026 MLB postseason begins Tuesday with four wild-card series: the New York Yankees vs. the Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros vs. the Chicago White Sox in the American League, plus the Atlanta Braves vs. the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres vs. the Chicago Cubs in the National League. The wild-card round rule is best-of-three, with games played exclusively at the home fields of the teams seeded third and fourth.

According to Bleacher Report, the winners of the four wild-card series advance to the divisional round, where they will face the first- and second-seeded teams in best-of-five series. The ALDS and NLDS winners then meet in the ALCS and NLCS in best-of-seven series, while the champions of each league will face off in the World Series. Several teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians, enter the divisional stage after about a week off. The divisional round begins October 3; the NLCS starts October 11, the ALCS October 12, and the World Series is scheduled to begin October 23.

From the respective previews, the AL matchups are expected to feature contrasts: the Astros come with experience and offensive power but a bullpen staff that struggled during the season, while the White Sox have a new core and limited experience but arrived in the playoffs after a strong finish to the season. In series play, the Yankees have a rotation built for the postseason (including names like Cam Schlittler, Max Fried and Gerrit Cole), but Aaron Judge’s absence due to injury restores uncertainty to the offensive power.

In the National League, Philadelphia reached the playoffs after a difficult late-season push and also used ace Zack Wheeler to secure the spot, which could affect the order of his starts in the first two games. Atlanta will rely on its predetermined starters, while San Diego comes after a strong September and seeks to continue its form to eliminate the Cubs, who struggled to score in the final stretch of the regular season.

As Bleacher Report reports, several series are expected to be tight, and the draws of familiar rivalries could produce low-scoring games and imaginable decisions from rotations and player conditions, while the schedule and days off change the dynamic for higher-seeded and wild-card teams.
