Hoxha: New system for early detection of landfill fires will prevent their spread
North Macedonia’s Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Muamet Hoxha, the director of the Crisis Management Center (CMC), Muhamed Ali, and Vladimir Burevski on behalf of the Skopje-based company “Modirum Platforms” signed on Saturday a memorandum of cooperation to advance the early detection of landfill fires and environmental protection.
The memorandum sets the framework for a pilot system for the video monitoring of landfills through modern cameras, intelligent video analytics and artificial intelligence, enabling real-time detection of smoke, fire and other hazards.
The Crisis Management Center will provide 24-hour monitoring of the system and will immediately notify the competent institutions when a risk is identified, enabling faster response and better coordination. “Modirum Platforms”, for its part, will make the equipment available for temporary use for one year, as part of its contribution to initiatives of public interest.
According to the ministry, this pilot project advances the use of modern digital technologies in environmental protection, with a focus on prevention, early warning and more efficient response. The results of the pilot phase will serve as a basis for considering the expansion of the system at the national level, as Makfax reports.
