We know we should drink water, but we often realize how little we’ve had only when we’re thirsty, have a headache or feel tired. Good hydration can bring some noticeable changes to the body, especially if we weren’t drinking enough before. According to Verywell Health, these are the five main signs you may notice when you start hydrating better.
1. Urine becomes lighter in color
Urine color is one of the simplest indicators of hydration. Generally, a light color shows you’re drinking enough fluids, while dark yellow or brown urine can be a sign you need to drink more. However, some foods, supplements and medications — such as B vitamins, iron or certain antibiotics — can change urine color.
2. Weight stays more stable during the day
Small weight fluctuations are normal, but losing more than 2% of body weight within a day can be a sign of dehydration. In that case, increasing water intake can help maintain a more stable weight.
3. Signs of dehydration may lessen
Thirst, dry mouth, headache, fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramps and difficulty concentrating can be linked to a lack of fluids. Good hydration also helps lower the risk of dehydration-related problems such as kidney stones, constipation and urinary tract infections.
4. You may have more energy and focus
If you weren’t drinking enough water before, better hydration can also affect energy and brain function. Dehydration can negatively impact mood, alertness and the ability to concentrate, so replenishing fluids may leave you feeling more energized and clear-headed.
5. Skin may look more hydrated
Some studies suggest that drinking water can improve hydration of the skin’s outer layer and make it appear more elastic. However, the evidence for this effect is still limited, so it can’t be said that water alone resolves dry or rough skin.
So how much water should we drink? As a general guideline, adult women need about 9 cups of water a day, while men need about 13. That amount includes not just the water we drink, but other fluids and the water we get from food. Needs vary with physical activity, body weight, age, climate, health conditions and medications.
