Inter and Milan’s initiative: fans could take home a piece of San Siro
In the past, taking home a piece of a temple was considered sacrilege; today, this is not only possible, but the act itself could benefit the environment. This is a possible scenario for “San Siro”, the temple of Italian football.
The official documents of the “Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Report for the new stadium” reveal that Inter and Milan are seriously considering offering thousands of season-ticket holders a memento of extraordinary symbolic value: the seats of the “Giuseppe Meazza” stadium.
Of the total capacity of 75,817 seats, it is estimated that around 80% — or 60,654 seats — could be recovered. This initiative would have an impact not only in marketing and sentimental value, but also environmentally.
Thanks to this decision, about 273 tonnes of plastic would not end up in landfills, but in the homes of the fans of the two clubs.
The plan envisages organising dedicated days — requiring booking and including staggered sector-based entry times — during which the seats would be dismantled with assistance and handed over to the fans.
However, the project’s planners stress that “although this initiative does not bring considerable savings relative to the total volumes involved, it has symbolic value in the context of the circular economy”.
In fact, this would mark one of the initial phases of a complex project — the dismantling of the “Giuseppe Meazza” stadium — which is expected to last 18 months and have an estimated total cost of €127 million.
