International Day for Universal Access to Information
Today is the International Day for Universal Access to Information.
The United Nations said the theme for 2026 will be “Protecting Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The role of access to information in addressing information disorder.”
In a digital world awash with information, disinformation and misinformation, access alone is not enough: people also need reliable and timely information. Timely and trustworthy public information can strengthen trust, support informed decisions and help people take meaningful part in society.
This day explores how access to reliable official information, proactive disclosure, media and information literacy, trustworthy data and digital technologies can contribute to a healthier information environment.
Universal access to information means that everyone has the right to seek, receive and impart information. This right is an integral part of the right to freedom of expression. The media plays a crucial role in informing the public on matters of interest, but it also relies on being able to seek and receive information. Consequently, the right to universal access to information is also closely linked to the right to press freedom.
