Iran Expels Swedish Diplomat in Retaliation: Given 48 Hours to Leave the Country
Tehran — Iran has expelled a Swedish diplomat, just one day after Sweden ordered the departure of an Iranian embassy official and summoned Iran’s ambassador in Stockholm.
“We condemn Sweden’s decision to prevent one of our diplomats from continuing his duties at our embassy in Stockholm, and we consider it retaliation for the provocative actions of some individuals against the Iranian embassy in Sweden,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said, according to state media.
“We have informed the Swedish ambassador that one of the Swedish diplomats must leave Iran within 48 hours,” the statement added.
The Iranian embassy in Stockholm was attacked last week by a group of people who broke down its door with a pickup truck, an incident Tehran cites as the backdrop to the diplomatic clash.
The diplomatic escalation comes amid the U.S.–Iran war, which is expanding its effects into Iran’s relations with Europe as well.
