J.A. Bayona in line for a return to “Jurassic World”: at the top of Universal’s list for the “Rebirth” sequel
J.A. Bayona, the director of “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” (2018), is Universal Pictures’ leading candidate to direct the sequel to “Jurassic World: Rebirth”, as The Hollywood Reporter journalist Borys Kit reported on October 2, 2026. The news has also been confirmed by journalist Jeff Sneider through his newsletter, The InSneider.
The need for a new director arose after Gareth Edwards withdrew from the project over creative differences; Universal has made clear that he will not return for the sequel. Before turning to Bayona, the studio had also considered Lee Isaac Chung, the director of “Twisters”.
The new film’s screenplay was written by David Koepp — the screenwriter of “Jurassic World: Rebirth” and of the original “Jurassic Park” — while Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali are expected to return in their roles, with Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall as producers.
Bayona’s “Fallen Kingdom” grossed over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office in 2018, while “Rebirth” reached $869 million. Universal has not yet officially announced Bayona’s appointment, and the film’s release date has not yet been confirmed.
