Jackson Pollock’s first New York apartment goes on sale for $1.9 million
Jackson Pollock’s first New York apartment, a one-bedroom loft in the West Village where the 20-year-old artist lived and worked during the Great Depression, went on sale this week for $1.9 million, as Artnet News reports. The apartment at 46 Carmine Street, listed by the Compass agency, goes on the market for the first time in a decade.
Pollock moved into the apartment in 1932 together with his brother, Charles, and his sister-in-law Elizabeth. It was a difficult time for the aspiring 20-year-old artist: the Great Depression was at its height and, with no income from art, Pollock got by with odd jobs and help from his family. Both brothers studied under the painter Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League, and the apartment served at the same time as a studio — Charles worked in the front room, Jackson in the back one.
The loft, with an area of about 64 square meters, is today fully renovated: it has four skylights, a contemporary bathroom, an open kitchen and a purely decorative fireplace. The building is a federal brick house from 1827, included since 2010 in the Greenwich Village Historic District. The current owner, Fergus Hurley, bought the apartment off-market in 2021 for $1.3 million; the Irishman, who came to New York in 2020 to work in the tech industry, says life in that place gave him “a personal relationship” with Pollock’s history — and during lockdown he himself created a giant painting inspired by Pollock, which can be negotiated separately.
The sale coincides with the opening of the major exhibition “Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (October 4, 2026 – January 31, 2027), the first dedicated to the famous duo in more than 20 years. For those who want to buy something more than a work of art, 46 Carmine Street is one of the few places where the story of the artist who would become the central figure of abstract expressionism began.
