“Other Worlds” opens today in London: Es Devlin’s first European retrospective at the Design Museum
“Es Devlin: Other Worlds”, the first European retrospective of the British artist and designer Es Devlin, opened today (2 October) at the Design Museum in London, where it will remain open to the public until 4 April 2027, as the Design Museum in London announces.
The exhibition covers three decades of Devlin’s career in sculpture, theatre set design, music, language and light. She is among the most internationally renowned names for the concert scenography of world stars such as Beyoncé and U2, for the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and she remains the first woman to have designed the British pavilion at Expo.
The exhibition opens with a replica of the artist’s studio in south London — with books, objects, models and drawings — and includes her best-known works, from the models of “The Lehman Trilogy”, the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony and the “Forest of Us” installation in Miami, to the new large-scale installation “An Infinite Library”: an 8-metre rotating triangular shelf with over 2,000 books, placed on a circular mirror, while the artist’s own voice reads selected excerpts.
The exhibition has been prepared in close collaboration with the artist herself, offering a rare journey into the creative world of one of the most innovative figures in contemporary art.
