Justin Verlander emotional after his daughter’s visit to the mound in his final MLB game
Justin Verlander was deeply touched when his seven-year-old daughter, Genevieve, walked onto the field to meet him at the pitcher’s mound as he was leaving his final MLB game. The farewell, surrounded by family, was a moment he described as a perfect ending to his career.
As Bleacher Report reports, Verlander said he was totally surprised by his daughter’s appearance and found himself in tears, asking her to make sure she was okay and happy. He left the field after a five-inning appearance in the Detroit Tigers’ 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates and was replaced with one out in the sixth, when manager A.J. Hinch came to take him out of the game; he was then greeted by teammates and family members.
Verlander’s daughter had also been part of the retirement celebrations the day before, when she threw the ceremonial first pitch before the game Detroit won 8-7. Before that throw they had practiced together; Verlander said she had wanted to go to the pitcher’s mound and was excited to play catch in the yard, something that had delighted him as a father.
Verlander, 43, announced in July that he would retire at the end of the 2026 season, closing his career with ten All-Star selections, three Cy Young awards, two World Series titles and one American League MVP award. He leaves the sport with a 3.33 ERA and 3,560 strikeouts, a total that places him eighth on MLB’s all-time list — according to Bleacher Report.
