Knicks warned of “title hangover” and three-point regression after 2026 championship
The New York Knicks sit atop the NBA after winning their first title since 1973, but the club faces warnings that next season could bring the familiar “hangover” effect and a step back in three-point shooting efficiency.
As Bleacher Report reports, nine of the ten key players from the playoff rotation return, while the only significant roster change is the departure of Mitchell Robinson; the team has brought in Andre Drummond to replace his role. The East is also expected to be stronger next season with major moves among rival teams — including LeBron James and Jaylen Brown teaming up with the Philadelphia 76ers, Giannis Antetokounmpo joining Bam Adebayo on the Miami Heat, Tyrese Haliburton’s return for the Indiana Pacers and Kawhi Leonard’s move to the Toronto Raptors — while the Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics remain strong contenders. The Knicks finished the regular season as the No. 3 seed and stood out in the playoffs for their long-range shooting, with Jalen Brunson leading them to the title.
Even a small dip in three-point accuracy could make the difference in such a competitive Eastern Conference — not to mention a potential Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs. New York beat the Spurs in the Finals in five games, but San Antonio held double-digit leads in all four of its losses, showing that a more experienced team could close games differently in a rematch. Even if the Knicks fail to defend the title, Brunson and company will remain heroes in the city for leading a beloved franchise to its first championship in 53 years, according to Bleacher Report.
