Korça Municipal Council votes in favor of merging with Maliq

Korça’s municipal councillors discussed the proposal for the administrative-territorial division of local government units. Under this proposal, the Municipality of Korça would also be joined by the Municipality of Maliq.

Before the council meeting, several public hearings were held with residents of the administrative units, where their opinion was also taken. According to the leader of the left councillors’ group, Petrika Tollkuçi, around 75% of residents spoke in favor of the reform.

During the meeting, opposition councillors spoke against the merger of Korça with Maliq, arguing that such a change must be based on broader consultation with citizens and on full analyses of the consequences it will have for both municipalities.

On the other hand, majority councillors spoke in favor of the merger, considering the reform an opportunity for more efficient administration and joint development of the territory.

After the discussions, the Korça Municipal Council voted in favor of merging Korça with Maliq, with 25 votes in favor and 5 against.
