LECCE – Fitto: EU Enlargement Toward Albania and Montenegro Strengthens Europe’s Future

Europe is turning its attention eastward, with the aim of completing the European Union’s enlargement process and strengthening its competitiveness at the global level, writes “Antenna Sud”.

At the former Theatine Monastery in Lecce, in the presence of the territory’s top civil and military authorities, as well as European Commission Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto, the opportunities and challenges linked to the integration of the Balkan countries into the EU were discussed, with a special focus on Albania and Montenegro.

The meeting focused on the importance of European enlargement, which is not limited to the economic dimension alone but also includes other strategic fields, such as security, scientific research, and university cooperation.

The integration of the Balkan countries was presented as a process that can influence the strengthening of ties between the region’s countries and European institutions.

Albania and Montenegro aim to complete the European integration process by 2030.

Both countries consider membership in the European Union an important element for consolidating the Balkans’ role in international economic and geopolitical balances.

Enlargement toward the region is also seen in the context of efforts to strengthen cooperation and stability on the continent.

The discussions also included Ukraine, broadening the perspective beyond support for the country in its conflict with Russia.

According to this vision, the European process should be tied to a broader project of cooperation and integration, aimed at creating new opportunities for development and for strengthening ties between European countries.

In this context, Lecce and the Puglia region could play a strategic role as a “Gateway of Europe” toward the East.

Puglia’s geographical position places it at an important point of connection with the Balkans, creating opportunities for the development of economic, institutional, and cultural relations with the countries pursuing the path to membership in the European Union.

Cooperation between Puglia and the Balkan countries could extend to several fields, including economic development, scientific research, higher education, and security.

These fields are considered part of a broader approach to strengthening relations between Italy, the region’s countries, and European institutions.

The discussion in Lecce takes place at a time when the European Union’s enlargement toward the Balkans remains one of the important issues on the European agenda.

Albania and Montenegro continue their integration processes, while the prospect of enlargement is linked to the goal of strengthening cooperation and stability in Europe.

For Puglia, the role as “Europe’s Gateway” toward the East presents the opportunity to serve as a bridge between Italy, the European Union, and the Balkans.
