Lola Tung, star of “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” to headline benefit reading of “Sanctuary City”
Actress Lola Tung, known to audiences as Belly in the hit Prime Video series “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and from the stage of “Hadestown,” returns to the theater for a special evening. Tung will headline the one-night-only reading of the play “Sanctuary City,” to be held on October 9 at New York Theatre Workshop.
The performance is a benefit: proceeds will go to the nonprofit organization RAICES, one of the most active organizations in the US in defense of immigrants’ rights.
In the reading, Tung will play opposite Daniel Bravo Hernández (“Romeo and Juliet”), directed by Caitlin Sullivan. “Sanctuary City” is the work of Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok, set in post-9/11 Newark: two teenagers brought to the US as children, when one of them gains citizenship, hatch a plan to marry so that he can stay legally in the country — but time and complications put their deepest friendship to a difficult test.
“I am incredibly happy to be sharing ‘Sanctuary City’ with New York, home to so many souls living the experience of these characters daily,” Majok said in a statement. “I am so proud that we are joining together in support of RAICES, one of our most vital national organizations, fighting for the American ideals of life, liberty and justice for all, by defending immigrants’ rights. Their work is essential always, but especially in this critical time.”
Tickets and more information are available on the New York Theatre Workshop website, NYTW.org.
