Major fire in Gorishovë burns even centuries-old olive trees; police escort 78-year-old suspected arsonist

A large-scale fire swept this afternoon through the olive-grove hills in the village of Gorishovë, in Fier.

The flames spread rapidly over a considerable area of scrubland, olive groves and forest massif, fanned also by the wind. The situation alarmed residents of the area, while firefighting forces and Police services were deployed on the ground.

According to preliminary Police information, a 78-year-old with the initials P. M. is suspected of having lit a fire to burn waste on his land. Because of the wind, the flames got out of control and spread to the surrounding areas, including land planted with centuries-old olive trees.
