The Socialist Party will defend to the end its proposal to divide the territory into 46 municipalities, down from the current 61.
Although the decisions of the local councils affected by the mergers have been against the draft, the majority’s initiator, Arbjan Mazniku, said in an interview for A2CNN that the left’s project is the best possible at this moment.
“The best solution Albania has,” he said.
Mazniku makes no secret of his eagerness to explain the concept of the city, which remains without an elected council and mayor. The Democrats’ proposal for 100 municipalities, according to him, takes the country back in time, to the era of the communes.
“The DP’s proposal is like in the days of the communes — they all sat around with the stamp in their socks, doing three jobs each and waiting for some citizen to come and have a letter stamped and signed,” he said.
The Socialists not only rule out the possibility of increasing the number of municipalities, but are open to the map being touched again in the future, to reduce the number even further.
Mazniku says that “the reform is made to serve and solve the troubles of Albanians and the citizen, not of the office-holder.”
On Friday, the Socialists in the Laws Committee must defend their thesis against the arguments of the municipalities that are against the mergers, while on Monday the draft is scheduled to be approved article by article in the same committee, before being approved in Thursday’s plenary session.
