Mazonakis case: lawyers drop the accused doctor’s defense, continue only with her husband

In a written statement, lawyers Nikos Agapinos and Tellos Agapinos, who defended the couple of doctors arrested over the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis, announced they are withdrawing from the defense of the accused doctor and will henceforth represent only the other accused doctor. The announcement was published Monday evening, as Hellasjournal reports.

“The defense lawyers of doctor Ilias Theodoropoulos, for purely legal reasons, announce that they are limiting their representation to this client, withdrawing from the defense of his wife, the other accused. This limitation is procedurally necessary, due to the factual differentiation of the two accused persons’ defense. Should it be deemed appropriate, the reasons will be developed in detail” — the two lawyers’ statement reads, according to Hellasjournal’s reporting, with information from the Greek state agency APE-MPE.

Earlier on Monday, another employee of the clinic on Karneadou Street, where the singer lost his life, crossed the investigator’s office threshold. It is a 61-year-old retired nurse who worked part-time at the clinic of the two detained doctors, Ioanna Gakas and Ilias Theodoropoulos. According to information, her testimony is expected to bring important elements to the investigation: she is said to have changed her pre-trial statement, saying she had been at the clinic and had not left at 16:15, as she had previously stated, and also described the panic that prevailed in those moments, when the detained doctor called all the employees into the room where Giorgos Mazonakis was.

The two doctors are accused of intentional homicide by omission following the singer’s death during a plasmapheresis procedure at their clinic in Kolonaki, and are in custody. The investigation continues, while the investigator has summoned other persons connected to the clinic to testify.
