Mazonakis case: prosecutor seeks lifting of phone secrecy for six phones, hard disk and USB
ATHENS — The prosecutor has proposed lifting telecommunications secrecy in the investigation into the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis, as HealthStat reports. The proposal has been addressed to the Athens Council of Investigating Judges and follows the request of the 32nd investigator.
The request covers six mobile phones, a hard disk and a USB seized during the police search at the clinic on Karneadou Street in Kolonaki; the aim is to examine all digital communication material.
The phones belong to Mazonakis himself, the two accused doctors who are in pre-trial detention, two clinic secretaries and a clinic nurse.
Secrecy is sought to be lifted for the period July 11, 2026 – September 10, 2026, the maximum provided by law; September 10 is the day after the singer’s death.
Lifting secrecy is considered necessary to determine the actions of the accused before and after the death; the Council’s decision is expected within this week. Meanwhile, according to Newsit, another nurse is testifying before the investigator today.
Recall that Mazonakis, 54, died on September 9 during a plasmapheresis procedure at that clinic, while the charges against the two doctors have been aggravated and risk sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
