Mbokazi’s return strengthens Chicago Fire and reshapes the MLS Week 28 title race

The results of MLS Week 28 brought visible changes to the title contenders. The spotlight was on the return of 21-year-old center-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who was back on the pitch and played about 80 minutes in Chicago Fire’s 1–0 win at Charlotte FC. His presence restored the gleam of the team’s defensive structure and gives coach Gregg Berhalter greater room to rethink the squad’s tactical approach.

As mlssoccer reports, the round also produced other names influencing teams’ results: André Luiz, a summer arrival for a club-record fee, has had an excellent start with Sporting Kansas City, scoring and assisting to immediately improve the team’s results. Philadelphia Union also showed important squad depth, winning 4–2 over Orlando City despite missing five starters; the success extended their unbeaten run to 12 matches, with 10 wins in that span.

Another positive surprise came from Austin FC, where academy midfielder Ervin Torres, 18, established himself as a starter and played a key role in the 3–3 comeback against San Diego FC, providing the assist that sparked the turnaround. After consistent performances, Torres is now considered an important element in the team’s midfield.

Nashville SC strengthened its position at the top of the standings, beating Toronto FC 2–0 and benefiting from Vancouver Whitecaps’ draw; Hany Mukhtar scored twice in the night’s win, as the team moved close to the all-time single-season points record (74 points by Inter Miami in 2024). With seven matches remaining, Nashville has reached 60 points and would need about 15 more to target the record figure — a challenge that looks within reach after the season’s form.

In summary, Mbokazi’s return and the performances of players like André Luiz, Ervin Torres and Hany Mukhtar have caused significant movement in the table and in expectations for the next phase of the championship; mlssoccer offers the analysis and key takeaways from these Week 28 developments.
